There are writers who have achieved fame on the strength of one or two books, sometimes because, from the mass they have written, only a fragment has proved of enduring value.
Of all the books Lord Dunsany wrote, I read only “The Two Bottles of Relish”. To be perfectly candid with you, I know nothing about his other works than“The Two Bottles of Relish”. But if he had written only that book in his life, I think, he would always find his position as an unforgettable writer in the history of literature.
You know, there are many short stories which have a marvelous unexpected twist at the end, but among those stories “The Two Bottles of Relish”is outstandingly admirable both for its suddenness and its unexpectedness. I would say that this is one of the best of such stories.
It’s a bit of a slow-starter, and nothing very much happens through the majority of its length. The reader will be careless. Then suddenly a drastic change comes, and the change is all the more shocking
