A great translation worth reading!

I had long been disposed to suspect that contrary to popular belief that Tolstoy loved people, especially people belonging to the lowest social class, he was secretly very fond of aristocratic people, or at least the world of the aristocracy.
When I reread "Anna Karenina" after an interval of many years, the suspicion was changed into certainty. Roughly speaking, this is a story of Anna and Levin, and one may be pretty sure that Anna represents aristocratic people and Levin represents common people.

レービンがキティにチョークを使って謎かけをするシーン。
英語では以下の様になります。
’ W,y,a: i,c,n,b; d,y,m,t,o,n? ’

キティの答えは、
’ T,i,c,n,a,o. ’

意味はそれぞれ、
’ When you answered : it can not be ; did you mean then or never? ’
’ Then I could not answer otherwise. ’

日本語には訳し切れない、ちょっと感動的なシーンです。
もっとも、ロシア語が分かる人には、関係ないでしょうけれど。
