Refreshing

A nice change from homeschooling books which often seem to aim to cram info into kids’ heads better than schools do. I like the scientific-anthropological approach, that we should look to pre-agricultural society (ie hunter-gather cultures) to see how kids should be spending their time. In modern western society, unschooling comes close to this, but unless there are other homeschoolers around, their will be a lack of playmates. What we need to look for is an environment such as that offered by Summerhill schools, where kids are free to learn how to get along with others, use their imagination to play with eachother, nurture & be nurtured by kids of differing ages, explore their own interests, etc
A great read which reinforced for me the absurdity of coersive education & the value of democratic schools.
