Hemingway’s best

Hemingway’s life is deeply connected with honor, and it seems to me that in a sense his life was a long road in which he kept on struggling to regain honor. You know, after the United States entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. Serving at the front, he was seriously wounded by mortar fire, having just returned from the canteen bringing chocolate and cigarettes for the men at the front line.　
It was not an accident which happened while he was participating in action. It seemed very disgraceful to him, and he got shocked, feeling that his honor was remarkably damaged. His shock is quite comprehensible, because everyone including himself considered him more courageous than anyone else. The situation was delicate. He must have found it very difficult to regain confidence in himself.
