Men Without Women の感想

ヘミングウェイが書いた「まえがき」があるのでは、と思い、
洋書を注文してみました。残念。「まえがき」がありませんでした。

14篇ある短篇のうち、短いものから半数ほど読んでみた時点では、本のタイトルの
Men without women
というモチーフにぴったり結び付くような話しは見当たりませんでした。

このモチーフとは、
「一人の」男が深く愛した「一人の」女性がどこかに去ってしまった、
というものです。

若妻が肺炎で数日で死んでしまう話しは、
二番目の短篇「In Another Country」にありますが、・・・。

面白かったのは、八番目の短篇「Ten Indians」の中に、
Girls never got a man anywhere. Look at your pa.
という一文がありました。

たった一人の男さえゲットできなかった女たちはどこにでもいる。
おまえのパパを、よく見てごらん。

長年夫婦でも、夫の気持ちを理解できない妻たちはごまんといます。
男をゲットするのは女には無理だ、とでも言いたくなるくらい。

Girls without a man
というタイトルの短篇集も書いてほしかったな、ヘミングウェイさんに。

Hemingway’s life is deeply connected with honor, and it seems to me that in a sense his life was a long road in which he kept on struggling to regain honor. You know, after the United States entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. Serving at the front, he was seriously wounded by mortar fire, having just returned from the canteen bringing chocolate and cigarettes for the men at the front line.　
It was not an accident which happened while he was participating in action. It seemed very disgraceful to him, and he got shocked, feeling that his honor was remarkably damaged. His shock is quite comprehensible, because everyone including himself considered him more courageous than anyone else. The situation was delicate. He must have found it very difficult to regain confidence in himself.
But I think that his best works, whether long or short, were written in those days in which he had lost confidence in himself. All the characters
