I get the feeling some of the smarties reviewing this book may, in fact, have studied postmodernism prior to their reading of this text. I got it years ago, didn’t get it, and re-read it in the bath recently over the last three weeks recently while growing a full beard. And drinking heavily. I feel the effort I made (with the book and the wine) matches the beard (which is growing well, thank you). The literary criticisms I didn’t really get (mostly because I haven’t read most of the post modernist authors Butler discusses) but it really came into it own (in terms of comprehension for me) when discussing gender, identity, art, politics and the like. I think I know now why a bunch of bricks in a gallery is significant, even if I don’t agree with why I think it’s significant. It’s political, and postmodern (in the very simple sense of referencing the past) and in order to understand what the post-modernist artist (ie little aesthetic appeal) intention is, it is absolutely necessary to
