Aeneas, the son of Venus, escapes from the smoldering ruins of Troy. He sails rough seas, has a tragic love affair with Queen Dido of Carthage, visits the world of the dead, where he meets his father and other beloved ones, and finally reaches Italy, where he is to found Alba Longa, the mother city of Rome.

This is an irresistible verse translation of Virgil’s Aeneid by Robert Fagles, who has won great critical acclaim for his superb translations of Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad. His translation of Virgil’s masterpiece is also a great epic poem in its own right.
