The theme of ‘The Brothers Karamazov’ is said to be the quest of God, and I think so. In the section called ‘Pro and Contra’, which Dostoevsky rightly considered the culminating point of his novel, Ivan tells a horrible story. A little serf boy, a child of eight, threw a stone and by accident lamed his master’s favorite dog. His master, owner of great estates, had the child stripped naked and made to run; and as he ran he set his pack of hounds on him and he is torn to pieces before his mother’s eyes.
Ivan is willing to believe that God exists, but he cannot accept the cruelty of the world God created. In other words, he thinks, “If God existed in this world, why would He let such an innocent child be mercilessly killed?”
This argument of Ivan’s is very cogent, but it is repugnant to what this novel mainly wishes to appeal, namely, that the world, for all its evil, is beautiful because it is the creation of God.
Many critics have wracked their minds about what to make
