The boy never calls, "Shane, come back!"

Whenever I saw this famous western movie over again, I was wondering why Shane had to die. Perhaps this utterance is likely to be challenged by many people who cannot believe that Shane is dead. I don’t want to disappoint those people, but his death is certain, because in the last scene, he is seen to have arrived at the graveyard, although it is very strange that there is a graveyard on such a high place of the mountain. Reading this original novel, I knew that his death is also suggested in the novel. Like in the movie, his death is not depicted decidedly, but how seriously he was wounded is more clearly presented than in the movie. One reason for his death may possibly be that independence-conscious Americans find it rather hard to accept the story that the whole problem can be solved by an outsider who practically has nothing to do with the problem, thinking that the story is too convenient.
