Deep picture

This book is very interesting on many levels. First you get a picture of a fascinating era in Arab history, and in (on some readings) the history of British colonialism. Second it is an excellent Orientalist document: despite Lawrence’s affinity for/interest in Arabic language & culture it is clear that he thinks of the people he associates with in the region as the OTHER. And third, Lawrence is a very crazy guy in many ways. Weirdly defensive, and spiritual in a peculiar way. Well worth a read.
