The first Shakepeare’s play I saw was A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I was 14 years old then. Our homeroom teacher was very much fond of Shakespeare though his major was Japanese Classic Literature, Genji Tale. He was also much interested in Kabuki. I saw the first A Midsummer Night’s Dream performed by our school drama society. Our teacher was its advisor and director as well. He was very close to one of the most famous stage directors in Japan. (They were at the same University, though not at the same time.) The director was very keen on showing dramas in general and Shakespeare’s plays in particular to highschool boys and girls. He handed a stage script of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to several teachers of Christian Schools in Japan. The stage script contained some information of stage lighting, acoustics and stage directions. The play was performed in a fairly large hall in our city. The director has been deeply related to the Kabuki World and has been interested in Kabuki Dramas. I had
