Independent learning for children 自立的な学び

　　This dictionary has been a long time favorite of mine and the children I have recommended it to.
It has humorous illustrations that convey the meaning and the words are easy to look up in English or in Japanese, making it fun for children to read it independently and try out new phrases in class.

Students can be given homework to look up vocabulary words and write them with a picture in younger grades and as they get used to it can look up and write new sentences or conversations in older elementary grades. The new edition has 2 CDs with songs and conversations. They have added a grammar and verb conjugation section as well.
The topics are useful. Children can get a sense that they are in control by being able to look up basic words they choose. Dictionary games can be played in the classroom as well. It is a wonderful way to get students used to owning and using a dictionary; a lifetime skill.
