購入者の感想
The lives of two school friends are closely intertwined in the story. Becky
Sharp, an impoverished orphan, is determined to make her fortune. Sharp-
witted, calculating and ruthless, she struggles to rise in the fashionable society
so as to acquire the trappings of success and wealth. In contrast, Amelia
Sedley, a sheltered daughter of a rich merchant, believes in love, marriage
and family life. Gentle, accommodating and trusting, she is at the mercy of
circumstances.
Becky is arguably the most willful and delightfully wicked heroine that
literature has ever produced. Quick to seize an opportunity, she pits her wits
against convention to obtain what she wants. Thackeray’s sarcastic description
of the hypocritical society and personages of 19th-century England is really
engrossing. It is a great pleasure to be able to read Thackeray’s masterpiece
in easy and plain modern English.
