M. Swan (2005) Practical English Usage (PEU)(３版) の（解答付き）練習帳である。PEU を始めから読み進めるのもよいが、根気が続かない。それよりこの練習帳を解いてゆくのが効果的である。たとえば、p.99 に次の問題がある。

1. Your computer is much better than the one I bought.
2. Your computer is quite better than the one I bought.
3. I’m feeling much better after the flu I had last week.
4. I’m feeling quite better after the flu I had last week.
5. This is much the best wine I’ve tasted this year.
6. This is quite the best wine I’ve tasted this year.

どれが正でどれが誤か即座にわかるのは相当な英語の実力の持ち主である（解答は２ 以外は正である。納得のゆかない人は、PEG §140.1/3参照とある）。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（４版）には「quiteは通例比較級を直接修飾しない. 例外：quite better すっかり回復して / quite the better of the two 2つのうち文句なしによい方」とある。なるほどと納得した次第である。練習帳は191ページである。全問に挑戦して正解を習得すればPEG (658ページ)をマスターしたことになる。英語の語法を能率的に学びたい人にはおすすめの練習帳である。
