‘Shooting an Elephant’ is one of the best short essays I have ever known. In this essay Orwell reviews a small occurrence which he experienced when he was working as sub-divisional police officer in a town in Burma. He turns over in his mind what he did in the occurrence, right down to the last detail, makes an analysis of his psychology then and imposes an incredibly severe judgment on himself.
One often reviews an occurrence in one’s past, but I don’t think that anyone can review an occurrence in his past so severely as Orwell did. He admits that he shot the elephant which he need not have shot, because he was not able to cope with the great pressure to do so which the crowd brought on him. Not only that, he goes so far as to admit that he was glad that the coolie attacked by the elephant had been dead, because it gave him a sufficient pretext for shooting the elephant. He concludes this easy with the following straightforward sentence. “I often wondered whether any of
