Tess of the D'ubervilles: 2500 Headwords (Oxford Bookworms Library) の感想

Oxford Bookwormsシリーズのstage6。2500words制限のretold版。ClareWestという女性がretoldしたものです。
先に、同じシリーズのオリバーツイストを読んだが、オリバーに比べてこちらの方が清貧で無垢な少女Tessが男にもてあそばれ苦悶しながら破滅していく物語だけに、心理描写と叙情風景の描写表現が多く英文としては難解です。
語彙制限によって英文そのものが易しく安直になると期待するむきには、さにあらずという英文の見本みたいな文章です。ですから、高校の教科書程度を越えているといわざるを得ません。
でも、高校英文法の例文みたいな構文も出てきますから、こういう文に出会うとうれしくなってしまいます。たとえば、
No sooner had he done so than she wiped the place on her cheek with her handkerchief.
とか、
’If you wish,’ she answered coldly. She offered her cool cheek to him, but her eyes rested on a distant tree as if the kiss had nothing to do with her.
のような文です。
一方、次のような文法的な解析ができないと意味が把握できない文もあります。
She wondered at the composer’s power. From the grave he could make a girl like her, who had never known him, feel extremes of emotion.
使役動詞makeの目的語「a girl like her」と原形不定詞句「feel extremes of emotion」の間に関係詞節「who以下]が挿入されている文です。
しかしこのように文法的な解析ができる文のほかに、会話文の省略形は意味がとれないものも多くあり難しいです。
