First offthis volume is excellent value : The Mystery of Edwin Drood, George Siverman’s Explanation and several other difficult to obtain items collected together in a handy volume with useful notes. Now a caveatDickens fan as I am, I found the title unfinished story far from Dickens" best. The writing lacks sparkle, and the whole tale seems somehow laboured. That"s not to say it isn"t worth reading, but it is a far cry from earlier triumphs. However, it does showlike George Silverman"s Explanationa growing fascination with psychology. Characters like Squeers or Murdstone were just "bad", but John Jasper"s motivations and personality are given close attention. Equally, the George Silverman story is concerned with a man"s self-justification. Sodon"t expect the usual Dickens. You"ll find something darker at work hereand worth investigating.
